  • Students will be provided with a handout that details some ways that we can revise and edit our work.

  • In addition to looking at this handout and using it as a tool, I want students to get the opportunity to work with some partners and get some feedback on their writing.

  • T = Tell your partner something you liked

  • Begin poetry!!!

  • For today's class we will do a fun activity related to poetry that gets students interested and engaged in the discovery process!

  • Structure of the Activity:

  • Students will all be given a slip of paper that has a random line or word from a pre-selected poem. Then, students will stand up, walk around the room to their peers, and they will have to read aloud what their word or line says. The trick is to only say what is on your slip of paper. Once you have read your word or line aloud and listened to the other person's word or line, you must then go up to the next person and continue sharing. This process will continue for approximately 5 minutes!

  • Then students will be split into groups and given a large piece of paper where they can write their predictions down. They must consider what they read aloud and what they heard from their peers in order to make an inference about what the poem is saying and what it means.

  • Once students have had time to work in their groups, we will have a class discussion about the poem and get student perspectives on it. Then I will reveal the complete poem to the students and we will see if we were on the right track or if we were completely off!

  • For this assignment, students must write about what they believe is the best part of them. Before students get time to write, we will do a classroom brainstorming session about what could possibly be the best part of someone. Then students will have to choose the part of themselves that they think is best, and begin writing!

We will compare and contrast the two different ways of approaching reading comprehension to see which is best for this class.

  • During the second time around, I will discuss important terms and concepts that are highlighted in each of the reading comprehension passages, as well as some different reading strategies they can use.
