    • We will cover the French and English Perspectives on war - students will record notes that will be written on the board, once we have read and discussed the section​

    • We will then discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the British and the French - students will be required to fill in a chart and answer a few questions to reflect on these strengths and weaknesses. 

    • The final topic we will cover today will focus on the section titled, "War Rumblings in the West" on pg. 104 - we will discuss the information in this section and also look to our maps that were handed out last day to get a better idea of the geographical context!

  • For today's class we will read and discuss the section titled, "Prelude to War: Acadia"

    • In this section we will discuss what a prelude is and what it means in the context of war. We will also discuss who the Acadians were, as well as what neutrality means in the context of this chapter. ​

    • Students will also learn about the expulsion of the Acadians by British forces and why this occurred. 

    • Students will participate in an oral review of the general perspective sand ideas we have covered thus far

    • Additionally, students will watch a 12 minute video on the topics we have covered!

  • Google Classroom Chapter 4 - "Competition for Trade"

    • We had some technical difficulties throughout Friday's class, so we were not able to get very far in our questions for section 1 

    • For this week's classes, students will have quiet work time to read particular sections of chapter 4 and answer the questions in the Google Documents. Each day I will ask everyone how far they were able to get, and we will decide together on a reasonable amount that needs to be done for next day's class. I will update this page, as well as a visual reminder in the classroom, to ensure students are staying on track. At the beginning of class we will take up the questions that were due and review any questions students may have. 

    • There are five sections for chapter 4 and each has its own set of questions and a Think it Through assignment. 

    • When students finish the section questions, they are to come see me and get the "Think it Through" assignments. 

    • The Think it Through assignments are done on paper, where everything else is done digitally on Google Classroom.

  • Students will be provided with a handout that details everything they need to include in their posters. There will be a visual component and multiple written components that detail the story behind the extinction of the Beothuk people who used to inhabit Newfoundland. 

  • Students will be required to do some additional research for their projects using the provided link below! Copy/paste this link to find further information on the Beothuk people. Only use the pages that are outlined on your handout for this project!

  • ​During today's class we will take the first ten-fifteen minutes to review the answers to our handout from last Wednesday! This handout should have been completed for homework if it was not finished during class on Wednesday

  • Once we have gone through the "Government and Economy of New France" handout, students will be introduced to their Final Project! 

  • Pose Now, Inquire Later! 

  • For this assignment, students need to consider the photos we took together as a class. Each photo represents a significant event or scene from Chapter 2 of our textbook! We have discussed these photos plenty of times as we've worked through chapter 2. These photos that we took as a class will be compiled into a handout. For each photo, students need to describe what is happening, as well as identify two possible perspectives that could be present in the photo. Then, students will write a short paragraph from each of these two perspectives to demonstrate their understanding of who was involved and what they could have been thinking during these events! 

  • Once the assignment has been handed out and any questions have been answered, students will have the remainder fo class to work on it. 

  • The Pose Now, Inquire Later Assignment is DUE AT THE END OF CLASS TODAY! 

  • Students will be allowed to work on it with a partner

  • Students will begin to work through chapter 3 by reading about the four main reasons why it was important for Britain to build colonies in North America. Students will also learn about the Thirteen Colonies!

October 21 - 25

  • Students will have Monday's double period to work on the next section of chapter two, "Exploring Deeper into the Continent." For this particular section students will be asked to read the corresponding pages in the textbook (42-44) and answer the reading comprehension questions provided to them. 

  • We will take the last 15 minutes of class time to go through the answers as a class

  • We will follow a similar progression on Wednesday for the final section of chapter 2, "Economy and Government in New France." Student will need to read pages 45-50 and answer similar reading comprehension questions, just like we did Monday. 

  • We will take the last 20 minutes of class to review the answers to this section as it is a little longer!

  • For each of these sections, students are being asked to continue to consider multiple perspectives when we come across significant events that helped shape New France into the thriving colony it became. 

  • Please have both booklets completed for Monday October 28th!

  • I will be demonstrating how to take notes from the textbook on a word document that will be projected for the students to follow along to.

  • Students will follow along to the notes and copy them down (if a student misses today's class they will need to get the notes from a classmate)

  • Once we have gone through the notes for this section, we will work together to fill in a chart that encourages students to consider multiple perspectives in this chapter.

  • Follow up from last week! 

  • Discuss the "European Imperialism" Handout. Hammer home on some key concepts that will need to be properly understood for the remainder of this chapter (colony, imperialism, home country, New France, and the reasons why European countries wanted to expand their empires).

  • Once we have discussed the handout and all questions have been answered, I will introduce the next assignment, "France Takes an Interest in North America - Jacques Cartier Timeline." Students will be provided with a guiding work sheet that asks them to highlight the important dates and events that were related to Cartier's travels and expeditions. Students will have a timeline handout given to them where they can record these notes! Students are expected to incorporate decorations and details (images, quotes, etc.) into their timelines. Students may colour their timelines as well! Make it as visually eye catching as possible! 

  • There are still two more photos that need to be taken today for our "Pose Now, Inquire Later" project. Once we have discussed our handout from last week and students are settled into their next activity, I will pull the students that were not in any photos last week and have them pose for the final two photos today!

  • Follow through with our discussion of Cartier and highlight Figure 2.4 on page 37 of our textbook. Discuss perspectives and ask for students to consider how Cartier and Donnacona felt about this significant event! What do you think Donnacona was thinking when he saw the cross being raised on his land? How do you think Cartier was feeling when he saw the cross being raised? 

  • For the next section of chapter 2 students will be given a reading comprehension booklet. This handout will focus on pages 39-41. Students will read these pages and answer the questions that are in the booklet. We will take up these questions together as a class and have a discussion about them!

  • Students will be momentarily taken out of today's class to participate in our "Pose Now, Inquire Later" project, where students are asked to pose and dress up for photos that are relevant to our second unit of Social Studies. 

  • As I will only be taking 5 or 6 students at a time, the rest of the class will be working on the following three things that need to be completed: Key Concepts, European Imperialism Handout, and the French Explorer Diary Entry! 

  • The Key Concepts handout must be completed and submitted for a completion mark. Students must put in a valiant effort to draw something in the image box for the key concepts. These should all be handed in by the end of class time today. 

  • The European Imperialism handout must be completed as we will review the answers next day! This handout consists of reading comprehension questions and fill in the blank notes!

  • The French Explorer Diary Entry (Good Copy) should be started. The due date for this assignment will be determined after we see how today's work period goes!

  • Review Day

  • For today's class we will review the Haudenosaunee and the Anishinabe societies 

  • Rapid Fire Review Game: Haudenosaunee. For this quick review activity, I will allow students 5 minutes to read over their notes for the Haudenosaunee. Then I will ask students to put their notes away and stand up beside their desks. Starting at one end of the room I will ask each student a question taken directly from their notes. If they are able to answer the question correctly, they remain standing. If they can't answer it, they sit down in their desks. We continue this process till only one person is standing, or until we get through all of the review questions. 

  • Once we have finished our review game, I will read through the Anishinabe notes to ensure students know the correct responses. This way, they all have accurate notes to study from. 

  • The remainder of class, students will complete a cut and paste review activity where they need to match specific facts about each Aboriginal society into the correct column. 

  • Please bring scissors and a glue stick to class today!

September 9-13

Monday:

  • Begin reading Underground to Canada at the beginning of each class. Make sure you are paying attention while I read, because you will be able to take the book test when we finish reading it. You will be able to gain points by taking the book test with our Renaissance Reader program.

  • Work through Key Concepts Handout #1 (primary/secondary source images, point of view, and bias, natural world, core values, world view, Indigenous, and traditional teachings)

  • Be introduced to our first assignment, "Opinion Piece."

  • For this assignment students were asked to consider the four values listed on page 8 of their textbooks. They needed to respond to the following question: Are these values still present in Canadian society today? Students were asked to provide three reasons that supported their opinion on this question.
